Ranking System

All ranking on my blog are born of my own opinion of the book and in no way relate to or are influenced by professional publishers rankings. All my rankings are from 1 to 5. In each review there will be a break down of the ranking I have given it. The break down categories can change with each book to fit their individual needs. For example a BDSM erotica might have a consent ranking. To find out more about my rankings please read on.

Fire In The Sheets ranking

Since my first book love is romance, I do have a Fire In The Sheets ranking that judges how hot the sex scenes in the book get. This is pretty self descriptive in my break down on each one, and each break down can have unique attributes based on what kind of romance it is.

Sheets up (One star): means the characters make it into the moment with some kissing and maybe light touching that doesn’t get detailed at all. These tend to end with a closed curtain sex scenes that allows the reader to know whats going on without giving any details.

Getting hot (Two Star): This ranking means that the characters engage in kissing, touching, and the reader is allowed to see them in bed, however none of the scenes get too detailed and the characters never practice anything that could be considered kinky.

Steamy (three Star): If a book has gotten this ranking it means the sex scenes are more detailed and graphic. The characters not only are shown kissing, touching, and having sex but the feel of it, the taste, and emotions are also involved.

Fire (Four Star): This ranking means the book has very detailed sexual scenes that happen often and describe everything that is happening in the book. The reader learns how each stroke, lick, and thrust feels to the characters.

Inferno (Five Star): Now, if I have given a book this ranking, it means there is not much besides sex in the book. The scenes are fully described and may borderline on uncomfortable for some readers. The characters may engage in hard core BDSM or be aggressive during sex. Emotions are light in these books and most all of the focus is on the physical sensations the characters are getting from each other’s bodies. This can also breach into non-consent however that non-consent as well as some BDSM can also appear in any of the other rankings as well, you’ll have to read the review for each book to see if that is something that happens or not.

Page Turner ranking

This ranking is where I detail how good the book was over all to me. A lot is taken into consideration when I give a book this ranking. Things I take into consideration include:

Story telling: This is the overall ability of the writer to be able to put together a story that is both interesting and fun to read. This mainly looks at the plot itself and how well it is written.

Characters aspect: This is all about the characters and their development. For this I look at how the characters change and grow, or fall in the story and their circumstances. I also take into consideration the characters personalities and how they are written for each genre as well as the story they are in. Part of looking at the characters is thinking about the believability of reactions and actions of each character in relation to their personality. I also need to like the character, or dislike the correct character. If, for example, I hate the main male or female character in a romance this will drag this ranking way down.

World Building and Believability: In addition to the characters needing to show believable reactions, the story, what happened in the book, and how relatable the story and characters are all important. (Even if it’s about aliens in space details that ground a feeling to something I can relate to is necessary.) This can include time lines, details, and emotion.

Emotional Connection To Characters: While a character can be well written, they might not be able to grab onto the reader in a way that allows the reader to become emotionally connected. This includes a lot of aspects in the book. Emotional response, action, reaction, details, well placed character history, deep emotional grab, showing the reader rather than telling the reader, relatability, understanding of situations, and human aspect are all important for this, however the list for emotional connection can go one for awhile. As a note, when I say human aspect I do not mean the characters must be human but rather they need to show some kind of human emotion or human empathy. We can not connect with something that does not display any human emotion. as with the character aspect part of the page turner ranking, I need to like the character, or dislike the correct character.

Pace: The pace of a book needs to be good for this part of my ranking. If the book drags on, it will reduce this, if it skims over important points or leaves them hanging all together it will also drag the ranking down.

Romance/Who Done It aspect: This is what was ranked in the first ranking. It looks at the over all important things in each genre right now I have only reviewed romance novels and one mystery. You will mostly see romance on this blog.

Sexual Content: This might not always be in every review, and sometimes not every romance. This looks at the intimate scenes in the story. Details, frequency, and emotional aspect are all factored in. Note, frequency does not go up if there are scenes like this in every chapter. There is such a thing as too much for some books.

Detective Effectiveness: This is in my mystery book review, and may appear in more. This looks into how well the detectives were displayed on the page. I look at their intelligence, how well they pick up on clues, how they interacted with other people, their ability to work as a team, the believability of the research put into crime scenes and how detectives work with them.

Writing Mechanics: This is not something that will appear in many of my rankings. If you see this it is because the writing in the book is lacking. This looks at typos, grammar errors, repetitiveness, detail placement, mixing up couples in the book (yes I have seen this), dialogue that relies on dialogue tags in order for the reader to tell who is speaking.  I will only mention what happened with this in my review if one or two specif issues happened so much that it was a large factor in what dragged other aspects of the page turner review down.

All of this is also taken into context of the kind of book that is being presented and its length. For example if I am reading a dark romance I am not going into it expecting a highly romantic deeply loving story. Also if it is a short novel I will not expect the details to be as heavy nor the growth to be as significant. Page Turner Ranking is also 1 through 5 and the details of each number is listed below.

Hard to pick up (one star): This book is poorly written and the story is uninteresting to a point that reading it is actually a chore rather than an enjoyment.

Want to see how it ends (Two stars.): In this ranking that book is not well written however the ideas behind it are interesting and I want to see how it ends. These books can be frustrating to read and the reader might find themselves skipping over a lot of the story in order to get to the parts they enjoy.

I liked it. (Three stars): This book had very few to no rough patches. I found this book to be a fun enjoyable read but was not a favorite.

Flipping pages (Four Stars): When you see this ranking it means that the book is very good and I recommend it to anyone who is into that genre. The book is very well written and I found myself unable to put it down. In this ranking, the only reason it has not gotten a five star is because while I really loved it and will read it again, it is not a top favorite for that year.

Pulled in. (Five stars): Oh my god I adore this book and I can’t stop reading it. I tend to finish these books in record time and read them over and over while raving about them to anyone who will listen. Books that get this ranking are in my favorite for that year category.

Who Done It Ranking

Who Done It ranking is for mystery/crime books. The things I take in mind with this include:

Crime Scenes: Things I look at with this is details, believability, research into how the kind of death being outline would look, how the police contain it, the things they may notice that is missing and their musings on what is going on or what they might not be able to learn from the scene.

Believability: As with the page turner ranking, I need to believe whats happening with the crime, detectives work, deaths, and how it's being solved.

Pace: This is how quickly the case is being solved. Finding everything way too soon and it all being just finding this person they know for certain can drag this down since it pulls it off crime/mystery or makes it more about a chase. If every clue is found and puzzled out at the end with no idea what kind of suspect they are even looking for this can drag this down. Now finding it all out at the end can be fine with all the details and crime scene placement is done right and the suspect has proper crime knowledge.

Team Work: This is how well each member of the team work together and help to solve the case.

Medical Knowledge: This involves how the victim was killed, and how much the detective, forensics scientists, and medical examiners know. Basically this one all comes down to research.

Overall Research: This shows how much time the writer put into researching how theses scenes will look, what detective do and should know, what medical examiners know and do, how laws work in that area, how a suspect is likely to react given story and knowledge of the character this also includes mental problems the suspect, detective, or any other character might have.

That being said, all my reviews are unbiased and completely honest. I do not feel anyone benefits from sugarcoated reviews.
