Personally, I find Christine Feehan’s work to be masterful even in regards to her ability to write stand alone books in all of her series. I feel you truly can jump into any of the books and completely feel immersed in the story and whats going on, even when characters from previous stories interact with the main characters.

My Review:

Anyone who reads Christine Feehan books knows you can expect a lot from anything she puts out and never be disappointed. Even knowing this, I was blown away by the content of Dark Legacy. This book is not just a page turner, it has the ability to pull you in a never let go.

In case some readers are new to the Dark Series here is some backstory to the Carpathian’s world, as well as to this book particular. The Carpathians have been through so much in their long existence of fighting their fallen undead brothers to keep humans safe, all while struggling to not cross that line themselves and become the things they hunt. Male Carpathians must find their lifemates in order to keep from turning or die before the temptation becomes to great. However, thanks to a war waged on the Carpathian by humans during the dark ages and a lack of successful births, female Carpathians are rare. Suffering longer than most to not leave their one true love behind, the Carpathian brothers of the monastery have been fighting to stay alive for their lifemates. When Dragomir finds out his lifemate is alive, he ventures out to find her.

Emeline is one of my personal favorite heroines. She is so kind hearted, sweet, and gentle. She has no extraordinary talent for fighting, and seems out of place on a battle ground, yet she is so brave that she not only threw herself into dangerous situation to save children she never met, but did so knowing that she would be captured, tortured, and raped. What she went through left her in pain for so long and my heart just broke for the turmoil she faces everyday. When she is convinced that she is the lifemate to the vampire who did all this to her, she fears for her life in the sanctuary she has found. To make matters more complicated, the vampire who raped her impregnated her as well and now she worries for her baby more than herself if the Carpathians find out what happened. Wow, just wow. What a compelling character Emeline is. The way she overcomes all of this, and the complex emotions that run through her head really pulled me in.

Dragomir is an amazing man whose patients and kind healing nature is inspiring and swoon worthy, yet his domineering nature is sexy as hell. He has waited for so long to find his lifemate and when he finds her he is determined to protect her and heal the wounds the vampire left. No one is taking Emeline from him, and he is willing to do anything to prove that to her. The amount of love and acceptance that Dragomir shows Emeline and her unborn baby is staggeringly beautiful.

Character development in this book is off the charts good. The characters are all very unique in their personalities, yet as things progress a change starts that is both significant and believable. At first Dragomir starts out very old fashioned and overprotective. He knows from the start that because of his beliefs he will likely do things that Emeline is not fully on board with. However, his desire to make her happy out weighs his need for her to follow his lead and eventually they find a middle ground that they are both comfortable with. However, this does not stop his need to protect her. When it comes to her safety however, he wont give an inch. I found Dragomir’s protectiveness very attractive and swoon worthy at the same time and even though I love that he changes for Emeline, I also found the character lovable before the changes that occurred.

On the other hand, Emeline starts out a strong yet broken character that is convinced she is unclean and not worthy of anyone. During the start of the story, the only reason she seems to keep going is for her unborn baby, she is also stubborn as hell and determined to take care of things on her own. As she spends time with Dragomir, everything changes. The shift in her personality and they way she comes to accept herself and the relationship with him is phenomenal.

As with any Christine Feehan book, there is a lot of amazing action in this story and every kick or lightning bolt sent chills down my spine. The suspense is kept to an all time high thanks to these scenes and really helps move the story along. Through all that, the characters still have a refreshing amount of humor.

When I picture a perfect paranormal romance, I think of something with a good amount of fantasy, action, and mystery but the most important part to me is the love that develops between the characters. Emeline and Dragomir’s love is so evident I couldn’t help but swoon at the way they come together and show their devotion to each other.

Overall:
I adore this series and while this might not be my number one favorite book from the series, it’s definitely in the top ten. Honestly, this is an amazing read that pulled me in and put me in bed well past my bedtime.

Would I Recommend It:
Hands down, yes. However, please be aware there is a memory of a rape in the book it is not however the main focus of the story nor is it described more than once.

  1. Lovely review. I had such a blast with this book as well. And its been such fun to see the series grow and she has done such a great job with the world building. There have been a couple of the books of the series, that haven't been my favorite, but this one was a fabulous addition to the series. I really liked Dragomir's character and how he treats Emeline.

    1. Thank you. I know what you mean. I started with this series and writer back when Dark Demon came out. There have been a few that I wasn’t too hip about as well. I felt some of the earlier books that seemed to center heavily around kids the woman already had, like Dark Gold, put me off a bit. It just felt like something was missing rather than added when I’d get to the end and think ok so now she’s going to out live the children that’s kind of sad.
