My Review:

Warning, though I try my best to avoid this, all reviews can contain spoilers of some kind. If you would like to know just my overall opinion of the book, and otherwise go into reading it blind, please scroll down to my overall and would I recommend it section.

I Voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Blood, violence, spy’s, assassins, sex, hot love, betrayal, more sex......... Wait, I thought the point of learning history is so we wouldn’t repeat the same things. Hum? Oh well, at least books like this are scorching hot reads to learn what, um, not to do from.

This was my first experience with this author, and let me just tell you, she knows how to make a reader fall in love with the characters right away. Sylvi is a fantastic character that is not your average historic heroine. After Sylvi’s family is killed, at a very young age, she vows justice will be done and dedicates her whole life to making that a reality. This lovely lady would much rather don a pair of trews and a leine than a fancy dress. Then again, a nice dress would only be at risk of getting ripped, what with all the swords, daggers, poisons, and other useful tools she carries in her belt, not to mention the fighting she does on a regular basis, but hey a lady assassin has to accessorize right? A lady doesn’t need pretty dresses and fancy hair styles to be kind and caring though. Over the yers of training, Sylvi collects a group of talented women who she will do anything to protect, even go on an assassin mission solo so they wont have the weight of it on their shoulders, and so they can eat. Food is kind of a necessity.

Ian Campbell stands to inherit everything from his rather uncaring father, who just happens to be the laird of Clan Campbell. Well, at least he did until he decided to run off and join the between a rock and hard place club. Really, all this goofy fun guy wants is to find himself in the wide open world, but life seems to keep pulling him into a world of violence and death. Not to mention an assassin trying to sneak up on him while he sleeps. Come on, really, is some shut eye too much to ask? Ian never imagined he’d find a beauty beyond compare at the end of that assassin’s knife. Now, he will do whatever it takes to see this bonny lass happy. After some skilled negotiations, they set out to find the people who killed Sylvi’s family and hopefully bring their reign of terror to an end.

Well hot damn! This is a fantastically fun book to read. Right from the start Sylvi brings amazing action scenes to the table. I really loved that while Ian is extremely strong and capable of bringing the bandages out, it’s Sylvi who does most of the fighting and battle planing. A woman being in this position in a historical romance is such a nice change of pace for me, and really brought her character to life.

Sylvi can kick some serious butt right along side of Ian, but when it comes to every other fun aspect to living, Ian has her beat. I really loved Ian for this. Ian may be built like a mountain, but he is also so kind and caring that it really melts your heart. Honestly, if I were Sylvi, I would have just fallen into those big arms and let him take care of me like how he wants to take care of Sylvi. I think one of the things I liked the most about him is his sureness. Unlike most men in romance novels, he knows from the start that he wants Sylvi to be his for the rest of his life and instead of proceeding with caution, he jumps right in after her holding nothing back. The things he does are impressive, but the things he says will make you swoon.

I love how these two characters grow together. Not only do they really accomplish a lot in their quest, but you can really see how much they change as people. Honestly, this part is done so gradually and well that I couldn’t help but feel like I was a companion at their side.

You know there is a lot of action in a book like this, but there is also a lot of hurt your cheeks humor. I loved how witty Ian was, and how it added to the overall feel of this story. This personality trait of his really helps Sylvi with her journey in ways she did not realize she needed, and I love how that pushes their relationship forward.

The only thing that really kept this book from getting a perfect page turner ranking was the way the books plot was structured. You know that feeling you get when you’re really into a book and you realize you are getting close to the end and have to check how many more chapters you’ll get to enjoy? Sadly there are two points in this story that created the whole “the end is coming” feeling for me when I wasn’t even close to the end. Rather than excite me, this made the story feel bogged down and forced me to have to read through several more chapters before I could get pulled back into the story enough to start sailing through it again.

Despite that, the adventures that happen in this book were fantastic. Honestly, I loved the new way this historic romance took things and how much it got me to thinking about how things were back then. A woman assassin did happen, but they were so dangerous because they were not common, and I loved how this book really explored that. This is a testament to girl power that really makes the true strength of a woman shine.

Overall:

Despite the few times I felt the book was coming to an end and then had to get back into it, this was a really good read. Sylvi is the prime example of how strong a woman can be. I really loved how unique this story was in how the fighting was done so well by both the hero and heroine. Their strength being matched is something you don’t get to see in a lot of romance, let alone historic romance.
I also love how Ian’s personality was that of a strong goofball rather than being all hard man. This book was a really nice and refreshing read in this amazing genre

Would I Recommend It:

I really enjoyed this book, but those few stops that felt like multiple endings in the book could cause some readers to put it down. However, if you don’t mind that than yes, I would most certainly recommend this to any historical romance fan.
